Don't let the clouds of smoke over the city fool you – Kamloops isn't always this shady.
In an effort to help restore the tree canopy around town, the City of Kamloops made its second phase of the tree coupon program available on Wednesday.
From Aug. 15 to Sept. 30, citizens can pick up a coupon with a $20 value toward an eligible tree purchase from city hall, the civic operations centre, the Westsyde pool or the parks and recreation office at the Tournament Capital Centre. There are 250 coupons available, given out on a first-come, first-served basis. They can be picked up anytime Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The program is part of the Urban Forest Management Strategy, and according to a release from the city, the goal is to increase Kamloops' tree canopy from 12 per cent to 20 per cent.
The city issued 474 coupons last year and achieved a redemption rate of 52 per cent.
For this summer phase, residents who picked up a tree coupon in the spring are still able to redeem their coupons for a $20 value at a participating location.
