One person dead following head-on collision

The driver of a pickup truck involved in a collision on the Trans Canada Highway east of Revelstoke has died.

Mounties tell Castanet the pickup collided with a tractor-trailer 35 kilometres east of Revelstoke at 7:40 p.m. The driver of the pickup was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the commercial vehicle sustained serious neck and back injuries and was transported to hospital in Revelstoke.

The Trans Canada East Traffic Services unit of the RCMP spent hours at the scene investigating the collision. Eyewitness reports suggest the pickup collided head-on into the tractor-trailer. RCMP indicate alcohol may have been a factor.

Road conditions were rated as "good winter driving" with temperatures at approximately -5 C with clear roads and excellent visibility.

The Trans Canada Highway was closed until the investigation was concluded and the vehicles could be removed from the road. The road was reopened by approximately 1:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 21, 2020.
