Pair of Kamloops curling teams qualify for provincials

Team Yamada and Team Hafeli earned a spot in the U18 BC Curling Championships

Two teams from the Kamloops Curling Club earned a trip to the U18 provincial curling championships after winning the Okanagan Zone playdowns in Vernon this past weekend (Feb. 8 to 10).

Kamloops' Team Yamada won on the U18 boy's side, earning the first qualifying spot by beating the home rink, Team Colwell, 7-4 in the A final. Team Colwell would end up securing the second qualifying spot in the B final.

Team Yamada is made up of skip Bryan Yamada, third Daniel Griffiths, second Nolan Bottineau and lead Zander Landygo. They're coached by Ray Olsen.

On the girl's side, it was a battle of Kamloops rinks in the final, as Team Hafeli emerged victorious over Team Calhoun 11-3.

Team Hafeli consists of skip Holly Hafeli, third Hannah O'Neill, second Jorja Kopytko and lead Natalie Hafeli and coach Monica Makar.

Both rinks now have a berth in the eight-team U18 provincial championships in Juan de Fuca from March 12 to 17. Winners from that event will move on to nationals in Sherwood Park, Alta. Nationals run April 2 to 7.
