Thompson Rivers University takes basketball openers

Women and men both win over Trinity Western

The TRU WolfPack men's and women's basketball teams both opened their Canada West seasons on a high note, beating the Trinity Western Spartans at home for the first win of the year.

The women's team eked out a nail-biting 70-67 win over Trinity Western, with Emma Piggin hitting the go-ahead shot with just 25 seconds left. Jordan Haggerty would add two free throws late to ice it.

Piggin, who was playing in first Canada West game in over a year, had 18 points to help new head coach Goran Nogic get a win in his WolfPack debut.

Jordin Wilkinson added 15 points while Haggerty chipped in 11.

The men's side topped the century mark in their win over the Spartans, blowing them out 102-80 in the Tournament Capital Centre.

The WolfPack won the battle on the glass, gobbling up 38 rebounds to Trinity's 25 and notching 11 second-chance points.

Anton Bilous led the way with 17 points and Brendan Sullivan and Joe Davis had 16 each, with Davis recording a double double.

Everyone is back in action again tonight as these sides will meet for a rematch, with the women getting things started at the TCC at 5 p.m. The men's tip off will follow at 7 p.m.
