The Kamloops Triathlon Club is still looking for volunteers for this weekend's youth triathlon.
“We always need volunteers. This is extremely important to us and if we don’t have enough volunteers, we sadly have to cancel our event,” says Josh Laye, club president and race director. “The more volunteers we can get the better.”
The annual competition takes place Aug. 11 at the Brock Recreation Centre. It starts at 6:30 a.m. and finishes at 11 a.m., and features youth up to the age of 19.
The main responsibility of a volunteer is to help out throughout the course, notes Laye.
The event, formerly known as Kids of Steel, was cancelled last year due to the wildfires, he says.
“It’s important for youth and children to get involved in sports in general and triathlon is a good one because kids are naturally runners and they're naturally on their bikes,” says Laye. “The only thing that’s a little bit different, a bit challenging... is swimming. Otherwise, it’s a good mix of what children are doing on a daily basis.”
He adds the event usually has 100 participants but due to last year’s cancellation he expects only 50 to 60 children to compete this time.
