Water can be drawn from North Thompson near Avola again

(via Karen Bell)

Interior Health says it is once again safe to draw water from the North Thompson River near Avola after a truck spilled fuel into the water over the weekend.

Water samples were tested by the Ministry of Environment, an environmental consultant and the TNRD and all have shown that the risk of contamination from the spill to the river is low.

A warning was put into place for residents who take their water directly from the river through private water systems. No public water systems were affected by this spill, although the Avola (Improvement District) water system remains on a pre-existing Boil Water Notice.

A separate vehicle incident on Dec. 30 led to a "Do Not Use" order for Vavenby. That order has since been rescinded

If users notice any changes in the water, such as a fuel odour or an oil sheen in the water, they are advised to stop using the water and have their water tested.
