The Thompson Junior Blazers opened the 2018 Western Canadian Bantam AAA Championship with a 5-4 loss to the Seafair Islanders Thursday afternoon (March 29) at McArthur Island Sports Centre.

The Blazers hadn't played a competitive game since a loss to the Central Rockets in the Okanagan championship on March 4. But they showed no signs of rust, quickly jumping out to a 1-0 lead on a Carter Streek goal.

The Islanders were able to answer back with two late in the first period. The Blazers took another lead in the second frame, going up 3-2 with goals by Owen Haight and Branden Toye, but once again they weren't able to hang on. Seafair eventually held a 5-3 lead before Reagan Milburn got one back with the empty net.

Seafair represents the Richmond area as the B.C. Champions. They'll play Airdrie Extreme tomorrow at 9 a.m.

The Blazers will have to shake the loss off quickly as they take the ice tonight against the Winnipeg Hawks at 7 p.m.
