Tammy Osborne, who runs TLC for Pets, which is a short drive from Aberdeen Mall, encourages new customers to take her up on the offer of a free, overnight stay for their dog. That way, pets get a chance to ease into the kennel routine, and staff have an important opportunity to observe the dog’s character and introduce them to an appropriate group of other dogs in the kennel.
“It’s a win for the dog and owner,” said Osborne, who believes the introductory service is unique in the industry. “The dog gets to see our routine, then go home without any stress, like a surgery that many pets experience when they go to the vet’s office.”
That leaves the dog with a positive frame of mind, which can carry over to the next kennel visit. “When they come back, they are way more open, relaxed and trusting,” Osborne said. Part of that is achieved by closely observing the dog so kennel staff can put them into a group of dogs where they feel the most comfortable.
“We want to make sure to get the right fit,” Osborne said, adding they use information from the owners on their pet’s character, and how the new dog interacts with staff to initially gauge which group is suitable.
“We want to match personalities, which over time can change as a dog gets more comfortable with the surroundings and other dogs here,” Osborne said.
That means dogs can be placed with the group that’s most appropriate for them, depending on their mood at the moment. “We have dogs going up and down our groups,” Osborne said, adding the goal is to provide the pet with a flexible environment that’s tailored to them. “Maybe a normally very active dog is having an off day or is tired, we can put them with other dogs who are calmer,” she said.
The overall effect of placing a dog with the right group can often help the pet’s behaviour when they go home. “I get customers saying their dog walks so much better with them after staying with us because they are much more confident,” she said. For more information about TLC for Pets, go online to tlcpetresort.com, or call 250-377-800.
